I see that you're deleting this category. Why? Was this discussed anywhere? Andy Dingley (talk) 14:34, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. This felt like a simple case of overcat to me. Every image in Category:PD Florida Photographic Collection was in Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection. The images left in Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection now do not have {{PD-FLGov}}. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:37, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If this is an issue for you, I can recopy images into Category:Images from the Florida Photographic Collection. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:45, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't understand why you chose to revert rather than continuing the discussion here? What is the purpose of the overcat that you reintroduced? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:25, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for completing that NRHP category[edit]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Cleanup categories[edit]

Hi Cryptic-waveform, I'm rather confused by your decision to empty Category:Files from Salem State Archives needing cleanup and remove larger numbers of files from Category:Causeway Street Elevated etc photos for cleanup by Pi.1415926535. These files require a large degree of cleanup including useful filenames, descriptions, multiple categories, correction of dates, and other curation. The large notice on the top of the category explicitly lays out what needs to be done before removing the files from the cleanup category. You appear to have added a single content category to each image without any other curation.

Additionally, the categories subtitled "for cleanup by Pi.1415926535" are specifically intended for my personal use. I use them for large uploads of GLAM files that will take me a while to properly curate, and that require an extra level of research when curating. The Boston Elevated Railway collection from the City of Boston Archives tends to be scant on description (and occasionally have location and date errors), so those files need to be individually examined to determine the exact subject, circumstances (many document certain construction projects or incidents), and so on. I don't want to gatekeep, but this requires both specific knowledge and access to certain print sources to do this properly. While you clearly have an above-average knowledge of the old elevated lines, you still made a number of categorization errors. Files that you added to Category:North Station (Charlestown Elevated) included separate stations in the same complex, files that should be in the construction subcategory, and a separate station a mile away.

I request that you add these photos back to the cleanup categories so that they are probably tagged for additional curation. If you are not able to individually check the files for categorization errors as I noted above, it would also be best for you to remove the content categories you added. Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:56, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. Thanks for reaching out. Since you're unhappy with the level of cleanup I've done so far, I will add the pictures back to the cleanup categories. Since they will be back in there, I won't remove categories I've added so far since you will eventually go back and correct the few mistakes I may have made. The majority of the categorization work I've done still stands. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:04, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've restored all pictures to both cleanup categories. I'll double-check the categorization based on the detailed feedback you gave. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:24, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for re-adding the cleanup categories. For reference, I have previously made the categories subtitled "for cleanup by Pi.1415926535" not be hidden categories so that the files are not automatically tagged as uncategorized. When the files have been tagged as uncategorized, users without specific knowledge of the system tend to add incorrect categories. This creates more work for me to cleanup without any benefit for users.
I appreciate you double-checking the categories. In the future, it's better not to add content categories if you're not 100% sure about them. It's more difficult for me to pick out the miscategorized files than it is for me to simply categorize them when I curate them. I understand that you'd like to have as many files as possible categorized, but these files won't be very useful to users until they're curated with detailed descriptions. It's a strange case where an archive has a large number of extremely specific files about extremely specific subjects - but relatively poor documentation.
Two questions about what you've been doing with BadzilBot:
  • When correcting the dates, would you be able to wrap them in {{Taken on}} so that the relevant date category is automatically added?
  • I'm unsure about the value of adding the link to the item on the City of Boston Archives website. Normally I'd be all for it, but the website has less information than the flickr page and doesn't actually show the image.
Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:29, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure I'm fully onboard with the philosophy of not starting work unless you can do 100% of the work. Oftentimes I will add images to “Category:Trains” or “Category:Aircraft”. I don't have knowledge about these fields but I see this beginning of categorization as a message to other contributors to take these files and add correct field-specific categorization. This has worked pretty well so far.
Also I don't think that you should hide uncategorized files so that only you will pick them up in the future. It doesn't really help collaboration. I started working on these files because they have been uncategorized for ~3 years and I knew that I could start the categorization work even if I couldn't do it completely.
As for your 2 questions regarding BadzilBot:
  • Yes, I can add {{Taken on}} automatically. As you may have seen I've already fixed the dates on all files in Category:Boston Elevated Railway photographs, 9800.018 except for File:-Everett- (16510497062).jpg for which I was unable to find a date.
  • You're right that the link to the City of Boston Archives website does not add any information. However the information it provides is more easily used by machines and it's a solid indicator that the file originally comes from the City of Boston Archives. Otherwise we can only rely on matching different text in file descriptions ("City of Boston Archives", "Boston City Archives", flickr ID number, etc.). I started adding the link above the Flickr URL for one file but then decided to add it underneath the URL for the reasons that you've mentioned.
Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:42, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I do understand your points about collaboration. Because of the specificity of the subjects, where they are nearly nonsensical without context, I look at these categories as akin to a draft on Wikipedia: a holding area for things not yet ready for public visibility. (Note that I only add files I upload to these me-specific cleanup categories - I'm not going to hide files than someone else uploads.) When the files had {{Uncategorized}} on them, other users were typically adding unhelpful categories like Category:Trains or Category:United States. While your edits today were helpful and added specific categories that I can improve on, most past attempts at categorization didn't get close enough to be a beneficial change. Re edits like this: please do not add EXIF time to dates that I have manually added. I'm not always great at manually updating my camera after daylight savings time changes and moving between time zones, so the hour of the EXIF is not always correct. I attempt to correct it before uploading, but am not always able to. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:26, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. I'll remove the times. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:28, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Geralix[edit]

Bonjour,

Cryptic-waveform (talk) 12:46, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Check Category[edit]

I have gone through my Check Category list you created and await the cleanup of the correct ones so i can work on the remaining. Meanwhile, I have found the Category:Media needing category review by date and have found Category:Events in Kalamazoo Public Library has an enormous amount of "check Category" images. I have double checked to see if they are in the correct cat's and was wondering if there is a way to bulk delete the Check Cat the same as with the cat-a-lot program. It is taking forever to delete Check Cat as they are in the 100's?

Hi. I wouldn't recommend mass removing from the "Media needing category review" categories. Files and categories marked as such need human review and I don't think that we should be using automated systems to perform this action. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:20, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes I see your point but 10-13 year old photos have since been (most of them) put in correct categories and are just languishing there. I don't mind going through them tho. I went through my own that you put together and added and corrected many links. Thanks for the help. Photo Archives (talk) 17:14, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Art works" vs. Artworks[edit]

Hi, you just renamed category name from "artworks" to "art works". Unfortunately "art work" is an incorrect spelling of "artwork" [1], or refers to a type of labor [2]. Can you revert? Jarekt (talk) 14:31, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. The parent category is named "Art works" and the majority of categories within this category are titled with "Art works by". This is why I renamed the category in question. If you wish to rename all categories "Art works" to "Artworks" it probably warrants discussion. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 20:19, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

JWST[edit]

Hey there. Just wondering why you removed so many images from Category:Images of the James Webb Space Telescope. I understand putting them in location categories, but they shouldn't be removed from the Images tree. Huntster (t @ c) 02:05, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
